Ecology

Objective:
 1. To define habitat
 2.To determine the kind organisms
living in a particular habitat.
 3. To enumerate factors which affect
the number and kind of organisms
living in a particular habitat.
Materials:
 TROWEL
 STRING
 WOODEN STAKES/PEGS
Procedure:
 1. Choose a site outside the school
building that is dry and exposed to
sunlight. Choose another site that is
moist and shaded.
 Measure one square meter area. Mark
off the area using the wooden pegs
placed in each of the four corners of
the area.
 3. List, identify and describe the plants and
animals (including invertebrates ). Count
and record the plants and animals.
 4. Dig up some soil from a depth of about 10
to 15 cm and place them in the dish pan.
 5. Loosen the soil and look organisms
present. Use a hand lens to examine the
organisms present. Use a hand lens to
examine the organisms. Draw and describe
the organisms.
Guide Questions:
 1. Compare the number or organisms found
in both dry and wet habitats. Which had
more number of organisms? Why was this
so?
 2.What do you think were the factors that
affected the number and kind of organisms
inhabiting the sites examined?
3. Do you think all the organisms
had the same needs? Was there
interdependency among them?
Give examples of such
relationships.
TAB
Conclusion:
How is the nature of the habitat
related to the number of organisms?
Application:
1. What are the examples of plants
and animals that can live in
extreme environmental conditions
as in deserts and cold places?
What special structures are found
in these plants and animals (ex.
Cactus)?
 3. What do you think would happen to
plants and animals whose habitats have
been destroyed. What can government, the
nongovernmental organizations(NGO), and
you as a student do to preserve biodiversity?
 The Philippine monkey-eating eagle is one
of the largest eagles in the world. It lives in
the rainforest. Its number has decreased
because of forest destruction. Surf the
Internet and NGOs have done to save the
Philippine eagle.
