Biomaterials are widely used to formulate artificial organs.

Biomaterials can be adopted

from nature or prepared in the laboratory by using different chemical processes with
incorporation of metals like polymers, ceramics or composite materials and used in medical
applications as an augments, or replacer of natural function. Biomaterials are mostly
applied in Joint replacements, dental applications, Blood vessel prostheses, drug delivery,
vascular grafts, Stents, Nerve conduits, contact lens and in surgery as transplant material.
Material science focuses on application of biomaterials and tissue engineering constructs
in medical or dental implants, prostheses and body transplanting devices. Biomaterials can
be metals, ceramics, polymers, glasses, carbons, and composite materials. Generally
biomaterials are integrated into devices or implants. These biomaterials must be
compatible with the transplanted body, Since, biomaterial may elicit the immune response
in the transplanted organism or it may integrate with the tissue. So it is important to follow
careful design in order to have accurate fit and beneficial effect in that specific anatomical
area of action. Behavior of the biomaterial depends on property of the material on various
environments, physical and chemical conditions, Prior Understanding of biomaterial
property and design is important for the successful performance of a medical implant.
