Bio
 Born July 27, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee
 Grew up on a former cotton plantation
 Attended Vanderbilt University in
Nashville, but eventually dropped out.
 Started experimenting with photography
in college
Photography
 Originally would produce images in black and
white like Walker Evans and Henri Cartier- Bresson.
 He saw an opportunity to further develop color
photography, so he captured images with a
neutral eye.
 One of his first photographs was an image if a
lightbulb fixed to a red ceiling.
Accomplishments
 He was granted a Guggenheim fellowship in 1974,
and later received the Hasselblad Foundation
International Award in Photography in 1998, along
with the Sony World Photography Award in 2013.
 Many people criticized his photography, claiming
it “lacked artistry,” however others praised the
“dreamlike quality that he gave to seemingly
mundane objects,” as well as the vibrancy of his
work.
