Photography Bio Born July 27, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee Grew up on a former cotton plantation Attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, but eventually dropped out. Started experimenting with photography in college Photography Originally would produce images in black and white like Walker Evans and Henri Cartier- Bresson. He saw an opportunity to further develop color photography, so he captured images with a neutral eye. One of his first photographs was an image if a lightbulb fixed to a red ceiling. Accomplishments He was granted a Guggenheim fellowship in 1974, and later received the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 1998, along with the Sony World Photography Award in 2013. Many people criticized his photography, claiming it “lacked artistry,” however others praised the “dreamlike quality that he gave to seemingly mundane objects,” as well as the vibrancy of his work.
