RBC

 Transport hemoglobin which carries O2 from lungs to tissues.

 Produced by bone marrow and stimulated by erythropoietin from
kidney
 Values-Males 4.2-5.80
 Females 3.80-5.20
HEMOGLOBIN AND HEMATOCRIT

 MALES- 13-17g/l
 Females-11.5 15.5g/l
 Hematocrit: Percentage of the volume of whole blood that is made
up of red cells
 M-38-54%
 F 34-46%
HEMATOCRIT
MCV AND MCH

 MCV-Mean corpuscular volume-80to100 fl

 Microcytic < 80Fl
 Normocytic between 80-100 fl
 Macrocytic>100 fl

 MCH-Mean corpuscular hemoglobin—27to34pg

 Average mass of hemoglobin per red blood cell.
 Decreased-Hypochromic
 Normal-Normochromic
 Increased-hyperchromic
MCHC AND RDW

 MCHC – mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration is

a measure of the concentration of hemoglobin in a
given volume of packed red blood cell.
Hemoglobin/hematocrit.32-36g/dl
 Shows that someone's red cells do not have enough
hemoglobin
 RDW-red cell distribution width. This is a corelate with the
degree of anisocytosis or variation in the red cell width
 Normal range 10-15%
Reticulocytes

 Reticulocyte count measures the percentage of

immature red cells in the blood and reflects
bone marrow production of RBCNormal value-1-
2%
 Decreased production Retics<2%
 Increased destruction Retics>2%
PLATELETS AND MEAN PLATELET
VOLUME
 Normal values 1.5-3.5l/m3
 In doubt ask for peripheral smear
 Mean platelet volume is 9.4-12.3 fl
 High MPV-in low platelet count bone marrow producing
platelets and releasing in circulation.
 Low MVP-low platelet count
