TOPIC: WATER
DISTRIBUTION
SYSTEM OF RGGP
CONTENTS
• Introduction
• Source of water
• Reservoir and tank
• Pipes
• Intermediate tanks
• Consumer and Amount of daily water consumed
• Water test
• Some problems faced by the people
• Alternate sources
SOURCE

1. PHE and WS water tank at POMA

.Areas like Itanagar, Naharlagun , Nirjuli, ganga village
, Poma , Lekhi, Damsite are the places which come
under the places which get water supplied by the tank
mentioned above.
2. Over head tank of DNGC college
ELEVATED RESERVOIR

• It is referred to as overhead tanks are required at distribution

areas which are not governed and controlled by the gravity
system of distribution system
• These are rectangular , circular or elliptical in shape.
• If the topography is not suitable for under gravity, the
elevated tank or reservoir are used.
• The height of the elevated reservoir is 12m.
• The tank is made up of RCC.
• Its capacity is 60000 Ltr.
• The dimension of the over head tank
• L= 12m
• B=4m
• H=3m
• There is an underground tank with the same
dimension as above.
H.D.P.E TANK

• It is very popular for storing less quantity

of water and hence useful for residential
purpose
• Handling is easy because of light weight
• Cheap in cost
• Maintenance cost is low
• Cleaning of tanks are easy
• Capacity of the tank is 15,000 ltr.
• Head of the tank is 5m.
• There are two tanks provided in our water system.
• Total volume of water available-
15,000+15,000+60,000+60,000= 150,000 Ltr.
PIPES

• The type of pipe used is grey cast iron pipe.

• The various diameter of pipe used are 100mm, 80mm, 65mm, 25mm
and 20mm.
• 100mm ,85mm, 65mm diameter pipes are used as intake pipe.
• A 100mm diameter pipes bring supply water from PHE and WS water
department tank at POMA and when it reaches our reserviour tank the
supply water is diversed into two pipes of diameter 80mm and 65mm
by a Tee joint.
TEE JOINT

• These easy operational

joints are used in different
industrial applications for
changing the pipe run
direction.
• A 65mm diameter pipe supply water from the DNGC reserviour tank
and directly discharge it into the over head tank of RGGP.
• The pipes used for the distribution of water are mainly composed
25mm and 20mm diameter pipes.
• Some PVC pipes are also used in distribution system usually in
bathrooms
INTERMEDIATE TANKS

• The water from the main over head tank are collected in different
intermediate tanks which have their own varying capacity .
• They are used to store water coming from the over head tank so as to
provide a good head/pressure so that the water can reach all the outlet
pipes.
• They are also used to extend the period of water usage time.
• They are made up of concrete.
• HDPE tank are also installed as intermediate tanks.
CONSUMERS

• The total no. of households in our RGGP campus is 63

with 2 operational canteens.
• the total no. of people/consumers of water in our
campus is about 470[approx.] including children.
• Civil block , college academic, water fountain etc. are
also some water consumers.
TOTAL VOLUME OF WATER CONSUMED PER
DAY

• total population = 470 peoples

• The amount of water consumed by a person in 1 day
including bathing, washing , drinking etc. =150ltr.
• Therefore total water consumed in a day
• =470x150

=70,500Ltr. [approx.]
WATER TEST

• (1)PH
• Usually the PH of water in water supply
system should be around 6 – 8.
• By testing the PH value of water in our
supply system is found to be 7.
(2)BOD

• Biochemical oxygen demand

• Definition- It is the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by
aerobic biological organisms to break down organic
material present in a given water certain at sample
at certain temp. over a specific time period.
.Usually for a water supply the BOD should be in the range
of 3-5 ppm.
. By testing the BOD of our water is found to be 4ppm.
PROBLEMS FACED BY THE PEOPLE

• During winter season there is shortage of water supply

• During repairing of pipes or if the pipes are damaged
usually the water supply is closed for 2-3 days.
• Leakage of water due to improper fittings.
• Theft of water by outsiders.
• Overusage of water by peoples.
ALTERNATE RESOURCES

•(1)WATER STREAM
•There is a small water stream near the RGGP
campus.
•The water of the stream can be collected and
used .
2) SPRING

There is a spring near the RGGP campus which can be pumped

by a pump and be used for water supply when needed.
(3)BORE WELL
As there is a river near our campus the water table
would be high which can be reached by drilling a bore
well and setting up a pump there and use when it is
necessary.
