ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

ASSESSMENT (EIA)

submitted by :HEMRAJ
Potential Issues
• Disturbance of breeding birds, particularly the Red Listed
Damara Tern Sterna balaenarum through the construction
and operational activities of the plant and associated
infrastructure.
• The effect of potentially new habitat that will be created by
the plant e.g. the water reservoirs and break waters, on bird
roosting and foraging patterns.
• The potential mortality of birds on the proposed 44km 132kV
power line and new substation.
• The potential destruction/modification of breeding and
foraging habitat through the construction and operational
activities of the plant and associated infrastructure.
Methods
• Site visit to gain a first hand impression of the
micro-habitat.
• The existing environment and the bird
communities currently existing within the
zone of influence of the proposed plant and
associated infrastructure (including the power
line).
• Specific bird micro-habitats and the species
associated with those habitats.
Methods (Cont.)
• Trends and conditions in the environment that
affects the avifauna as it currently exist within the
zone of influence (cumulative impacts).
• Gaps in baseline data and indication of the
confidence levels.
• The best available data sources (both published and
unpublished literature) for baseline conditions (local
knowledge e.g. Rod Braby NACOMA).
• Bird sensitive areas will be mapped, and particular
emphasis will be placed on habitat for Red Data and
endemic species.
Methods (Cont.)
• Potential impact on the birds will be assessed
and evaluated.
• Practical mitigation measures will be
recommended and discussed.
• If a need for the implementation of a
monitoring programme in the EMP phase is
evident, it will highlighted and a programme
proposed.
Information required
• Shapefiles (WGS 84 Geographic):
– 4km x 6km study area (between saltworks and mile 8)
– Damara Tern breeding areas
