WHAT IS A LITERATURE REVIEW?

 An assessment of a body or bodies of literature that


pertains to a specific question

 Assists researchers to collect ideas of others interested in


a particular areas

 Provides a description, summary, and critical evaluation of


each work

 Gives future research context by telling the story of work


done so far

 Assist researchers in getting ideas regarding the areas for


research – called as ‘gaps’
 Literature review hence guide the researchers according to the
interests and situation
 Researchers need to locate other work dealing with the desired
study area, and
 To evaluate the relevancy to the research question of interest

• Used to organize and locate primary & secondary


Tertiary sources.
• Systematically.
(General reference tools)
• Example: indexes and abstracts.

• Publications in which researches report the results of


their investigations (original reports).
Primary • Detail information about the research.
• Example: journal articles.

• Author describe the work of others (secondhand data).


Secondary • Quick overview.
• Example: textbooks.
