• Mixed gas
• LPG
• Oxygen
• Nitrogen
• Argon
Gas Media
• Mixed gas:
– Calorific value 1850 Kcal/Nm3
– Mixed gas is sourced from Gas mixing Station by mixing Low and
High calorific by-product gas i.e Blast furnace(750 K Cal/Nm3) and
Cokeoven gas (4400 Kcal/Nm3) in the ratio of 1: 2.2
• Oxygen, Nitrogen & Argon
– O2, N2, Ar are sourced from New Oxygen plant of capacity 1800 TPD
ordered on M/s Praxair India Private Limited(PIPL)
– The location for new oxygen plant will be coming up behind the
existing O2 plants near MSDS road.
• LPG
– Calorific value 11800 kcal/Kg
– Sourced from New LPG station of storage capacity 6 X 25 Tons by the
side of MSDS.
– Supplied by Ms/ TOIPL(M/s Elf)

• Age and physical condition of the body also have their influence,
alcoholism and obesity lower the body’s resistance.
• There is also individual variation depending upon certain factors
influencing absorption ex. Blood volume, Circulation, deficiency,
breathing rate, state of health, anemia, old age etc.,

ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE OF GAS EXPOSURE

The gas affected person should be removed from gassy atmosphere to
fresh air as soon as possible and the tight fitting clothes, shoes and the
belt should be loosened.
• Any type of physical exertion to the affected person must be avoided.
• The first aid station to be informed & the affected person should be sent
in an ambulance only.
• Artificial respiration if required should be started immediately by a
trained first aider or use of Oxygen resuscitator.
• Inform concerned supervisors of the dept , gas control & gas safety
station and safety dept
C. OXYGEN

• It is important to us because it is needed to support life. It is

colourless, odourless, tasteless and slightly heavier than air and its
volume in air by % is 20.9.

• It is dangerous as it supports combustion fiercely and gives high

temperature. It is potential fire hazard and must kept away from
the inflammable things and temperature zones.

• Used in furnace for maintaining the temperature as such in corex

to undergo reduction process at high temperature and for oxidation
process in BOF and services lines for gas cutting, torch cutting etc.,
D. NITROGEN
• It is colourless, odourless gas and is neither combustible nor a
supporter of combustion. Nitrogen is used as an inert gas,
purging/sealing medium and in some of pneumatic instruments and
drives etc.

• Nitrogen does not support life and in fact high concentration of

nitrogen in the atmosphere reduces the oxygen concentration,
causes as asphyxiation or suffocation.

E. ARGON
• This product is inert as a gas at normal temperature & pressure. It is
colourless, odourless, gas.

• Argon is a asphyxiant. Due to its presence, lack of oxygen can cause

death.

• It is used in BOF for hot steel stirring for uniform mixture and in BOF-
CCP lab
B. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas )

• LPG is used as fuel for heating, cooking, Industrial purposes, cutting

and welding.

• It exists as vapours under ambient conditions of temp and pressure

and can be liquefied by the application of moderate pressure.

• Saturated hydrocarbons in the form of propane and butane

constitute the bulk of commercial available LPG.

• In JSW it is used as fuel for heating, pilot burning of flare stacks,

torch cutting machine in CCP, Runner heating and also in the
absence of mixed gas it is backup fuel.
