Who was Jean Piaget?

• Cognitive development Scientist

• Known for his 4 stages of child development

• Started in psychology to get some extra cash but

then was interested into it

• Used his own kids for his experiments

What did he Theorized?

• Piaget believed there are

certain levels of thinking that
can’t be attainted through
learning

• These levels could only be

achieved through reaching the
correct cognitive stage and
age
What was the one important aspect of this?

• Object Permanence- the ability to know that an object exists even

when it is hidden from your senses

• For Example- Peek a boo

• Developed in the sensorimotor

stage
What is so important about this?

Without Object Permanence problem solving and

internal thinking would be impossible to do

You could not enter the next development

stage without it

Has to be mastered no matter what

How was this research found?

• Piaget used unstructured evaluation

methods- methods that are made during the
study

• For example Piaget would let kids in fixed

ages play games and see the mistakes they
made and how they think
What was found? (Outcome)

In the Sensorimotor stage there is six Even though there are 6 substages object
substages in it where object permanence permanence really develops during stages
develops. 3-6
Object Permanence Development (Outcome)

Stage 3 Stage 4 Stage 5

• (8 to 10 months)- A • (10 to 12 months)- More •(12 to 18 months)- Child is
child will start to look developed but not fully now a year old with a mostly
for objects even if only intact because the developed permanence but
cannot comprehend when an
a small part of it is child cannot visualize it object is put in something
visible when a object is gone but then disappears

Stage 6
(18 to 24 months)
Object Permanence is fully
formed and the child is ready
to head on to the next stage
What Did Piaget think about this? (Analysis)

PIAGET BELIEVED THAT ONCE BELIEVED THAT THE FOUNDATION

OBJECT PERMANENCE DEVELOPS OF THOUGHT WAS OBJECT
TRUE THOUGHT CAN BEGIN PERMANENCE
From today most psychologists
generally agree with Piaget’s
theory of cognitive development

How is this
Info used His work is now the foundation of
cognitive development that
today people will learn in psychology

(Impact)
Most cognitive development
experiments are made to help
approve or disapprove his theory
or just relate to his experiments
