What are vertical farming and its benefit?

• Vertical farming is the practice of producing food and

medicine in vertically stacked layers, vertically inclined
surfaces and/or integrated into other structures (such
as in a skyscraper, used warehouse, or shipping
container). The modern ideas of vertical farming use
indoor farming techniques and controlled-environment
agriculture (CEA) technology, where all environmental
factors can be controlled. These facilities utilize
artificial control of light, environmental control
(humidity, temperature, gases) and fertigation. Some
vertical farms use techniques similar to greenhouses,
where natural sunlight can be augmented with artificial
lighting and metal reflectors.
Benefits of vertical farming
1) Year-round crop production
2) Eliminates agricultural runoff
3) Significantly reduces the use of fossil fuels
(farm machines and transport of crops)
4) Makes use of abandoned or unused
properties
5) No weather-related crop failures
6) Offers the possibility of sustainability for
urban centers
7) Converts black and gray water to drinking
water
8) Adds energy back to the grid via methane
generation
9) Creates new urban employment
opportunities
10) Reduces the risk of infection from agents
transmitted at the agricultural interface
11) Returns farmland to nature, helping to
restore ecosystem functions and services
12) Controls vermin by using restaurant waste
for methane generation
