Module 2.

•CLIMATE
Learning Competency

•The learners should be able to

explain how different factors
affect the climate of an area.
Learning objectives

• At the end of the session, the students should be able to;

• 1. define ocean current,
• 2. describe how ocean current affects climate.
Ocean water

• The ocean water never stands

still.
• Ocean currents are like rivers that
move within the ocean.
• This movement influences the
surrounding climate.
What is ocean current?
An ocean current is any more or less permanent or
continuous, directed movement of ocean water that
flows in one of the Earth's oceans. The currents are
generated from the forces acting upon the water like the
earth's rotation, the wind, the temperature and salinity
differences and the gravitation of the moon.
What are the 5 major ocean currents?
What are the 5 notable gyres?
1.North Atlantic
2.South Atlantic
3. North Pacific,
4.South Pacific
5. Indian Ocean gyres.
How do nearby Ocean Currents affect the
climate?

Warm and cold ocean currents bring warm moist air near to coastal areas.
• Great Britain is an example – latitude position puts it in the cold and dry climate zone
• However it is moist and warmer due to the Gulf Stream, a warm current.
