PICK ‘EM UP AND MATCH

Each group will be given an

envelope containing words and
descriptions related to the
layers of the earth. Match the
words with the correct
description. You only have 1-2
minutes to do the task.
LAYERS
OF THE EARTH
OBJECTIVE:

Differentiate the layers of

the Earth.
Do you think it is possible to
dig your way through the
ground to the other side of the
Earth? Explain why or why not?

BUCKET
Do you think it is possible to
dig your way through the
ground to the other side of the
Earth? Explain why or why not?
• It is very impossible to actually dig your
way through the ground to reach the
other side of the earth because after 5
miles down, you would experience such
intense heat that you would burn up.
Nobody has ever been able to dig this far.
So knowing we cannot actually dig our
way to the other side of the world, well
have to get there another way such as
plane or boat.
So, how do we know what’s
down there?
• By studying rocks and minerals,
volcanoes, and earthquakes.
• They believe that as the Earth
cooled, heavier materials sank
towards the center of the Earth
and lighter materials surfaced to
the top.
• What do you notice about this
image? Is it the exact size of
the layers? Is the model flat or
dimensional?"
INFO STOP-OVER
Each station has a posted
information chart. Gather
information about each layer’s
composition, depth/thickness and
temperature. Use the matrix table to
record information. ( 2.5 Minutes per
station)

Goal: Differentiate the layers

of the earth using the
information gathered

GEOSPHERE
“Geo” means ground
Makes up the solid portion of
the Earth, its structure and land.
CRUST
• Thin layer – 40 kilometers deep
composed of solid rocks and
minerals.
• Temperature of 22 degrees Celsius
• Two forms:
Oceanic Crust
Continental Crust
UPPER MANTLE
• Extends from the crust to a depth of bout 670
kilometers below the Earths surface.
• Mostly solid and malleable ( regions
contributing to tectonic activities)
• It is the solid, outer part of the planet.
• Composed of iron, oxygen, silicon, magnesium
and aluminum
LOWER MANTLE
• Extends from 660 kilometers up to 2700
kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
• Temperature is about 3000 degrees
Celsius
• It is made up of iron, oxygen, magnesium
and aluminum
OUTER CORE
• Second largest layer
• 2200 kilometers thick and is composed entirely
of superheated liquid molten lava of liquid iron
and nickel.
• 4500 degrees Celsius to 5,500 degrees Celsius
• Low viscosity ( flow is slow)
• Sustains the planet’s magnetic field
INNER CORE
• Exceedingly hot, dense huge metal
of mostly iron
• 2500 Kilometers wide
• The temperature range is from 5000
-6000 degrees Celsius
Why is it necessary to learn
about the internal structures of
the earth?
