◦ Doordarshan literally means , a glimpse of all afar , it is the face and witness of India’s
transformation to a global leader in digital communications.

◦ It started on September 15 year 1959 on an experiment basis and the television reached
to the living rooms of the people living in and around delhi.

◦ Then in the consequent years, the services were transferred to Mumbai and Amritsar
and to seven other cities of India.

◦ On April 1,1976 it separated from All India Radio and became a separate entity.

◦ Since then, it has expanded to cover length and breadth of our country.

◦ Definitely it has taken care of all linguistic, geographical and cultural groups and it has
promoted social, cultural and educational development of our country.

◦ We have a network of transmitters equipped with studios and facilities to produce


programmes even in regional languages.

◦ Over here in Doordarshan , Engineering blends with creativity to make it a role
model.We have captivated the hearts of millions of viewers.

◦ Over the years , we have grown into a network operating 34 satellite channels besides
providing free-to-air DTH services having 104 in its bookings along with 40 Radio
Channels.

◦ DD-Free Dish is available in Ku-Band on G-Sat-15( at 93.5 o E).This Ku-Band DTH service
provides the TV coverages throughout the Indian territory.

◦ DTH signals can be received through a small dish receive system(Set-Top-Box) and Dish
60-90 cm in diameter for which no monthly subscription fee is payable by the viewers.
PRASAR BHARTI
Prasar Bharati is India's largest public
broadcasting agency. It is a statutory
autonomous body set up by an Act of
Parliament and comprises the
Doordarshan Television Network and All
India Radio, which were earlier media
units of the Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting.

1. The Prasar Bharati Act provides
for the establishment of a
Broadcasting Corporation, to be
known as Prasar Bharati, and
define its composition,
functions, and powers.

2. The Act grants autonomy to All


India Radio and to
Doordarshan, both of which
were previously under
government control.

3. The Act received the assent of


the President of India on 12
September 1990 after being
unanimously passed by
Parliament. It was finally
implemented in November
1997.
