Electric Vehicle Charging infrastructure in India

Indian EV Overview

 India has launched National Mission for Electric Mobility (NMEM) for expediting adoption and manufacturing of electric and hybrid
vehicles in India.
 To achieve this objective, National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 was released in 2012 which lays the vision and provides a
roadmap for achieving significant penetration of these efficient and eco-friendly vehicles in India by 2020.
 It aims to transform India as a leader in the two-wheeler and four-wheeler market (encompassing electric and hybrid vehicles) with
anticipated sales of around 6-7 million units by 2020.
 India can save 64% of anticipated passenger road-based mobility-related energy demand and 37% of carbon emissions in 2030 by
pursuing a shared, electric, and connected mobility future.
 In addition to reducing energy demand, this transformation yields other benefits, including lower congestion as shared, public, and
nonmotorized modes of transportation serve an increasing share of mobility demand.
 While there are a number of bottlenecks in EV adoption, and R&D being undertaken by automobile manufacturers and research
organisations to address them, one major issue that must be addressed urgently is the integration of appropriate charging
infrastructure for EVs, before a rapid expansion in EV numbers can happen.
 Government of India has constituted a committee for standardization of protocol of AC and DC charging infrastructure.
