His compositional technique

Cage was also a pioneer of the prepared piano (a
piano with its sound altered by objects placed between
or on its strings or hammers), for which he wrote
numerous dance-related works and a few concert pieces.
The best known of these is Sonatas and Interludes
(194648).
 Thus, on 7 June 1935, he married Xenia Andreyevna
Kashevaroff in the desert at Yuma, Arizona. The couple first
stayed in Pacific Palisades with John's parents but later
shifted to Hollywood.

 He died of a stroke, a hospital spokesman said. The influence of


Mr. Cage, who was also a writer and philosopher, spread far beyond

 Cage discovered that chance was as important of a force
governing a musical composition as the artist's will, and allowed it to
play a central role in all of his compositions.
