In October,1896,Helen entered

Cambridge school for young ladies to be


prepared for Radcliffe. When Helen was
little girl she surprised her friends by
the announcement, “some day I shall go
to college- but I shall go to Harvard!”.
the thought of going to college took
root in her heart, which impelled her to
enter into competition for a degree with
seeing and hearing girls.
Helen took the greatest
delight in German books .Mr.Gilman
instructed her part of the year in
englisH literature. sHe read “as You
