QUESTION TAGS

It’s cold today, isn’t it?
You haven’t seen my keys, have you?
A question tag is an expression like isn’t it? and have
you? Put at the end of a statement.
We form question tags with an auxiliary verb (eg be,
have, can) + personal pronoun (eg it, you)
You aren’t listening to me, are you?
You haven’t seen my keys, have you?
He can swim, can’t he?
We normally put a negative question tag with a
positive statement, and a positive question tag with a
negative statement. Compare:
It isn’t cold today, is it?
It is cold today, isn’t it?
You don’t like football, do you?
you like football, don’t you?
He can’t swim, can he?
He can swim, can’t he?
NOTE:
A. The question tag for I am is aren’t I (common in
spoken English) or am I not (formal English).
I’m right, aren’t I?
I am supposed to be here, am I not?
B. After imperative, we can use the question tags
will/would you? and can/could you? When we want
people to do something.
Shut the door, will you?
Help me with this bag, could you?
3. After let’s we use shall we? To make suggestions.
Let’s go out, shall we?
4. We use they in question tags after somebody/
someone, everybody/ everyone and nobody/ no one
.
Somebody told you, didn’t they?
No one phoned for me, did they?
5. We use it in question tags after nothing and
everything.
Nothing is wrong, is it?
Everything is okay, isn’t it?
6. We can use there as a subject in question tags.
There won’t be any problem, will there?
There is a meeting tonight, isn’t there?
Put a question tag at the end of each sentence.
Sometimes more than one answer is possible.
1. You don’t like this music,…….. ?
2. There’s plenty of time,……… ?
3. I’m too late,…….. ?
4. You haven’t seen the newspaper,……… ?
5. Lynne speaks French and German,……… ?
6. They didn’t go to the concert,……… ?
7. You’d like to have something to eat,……… ?
8. Don’t forget to lock the door,……… ?
9. You couldn’t do me a favor,……… ?
10.Switch on the light for me,……… ?
11.Nobody was watching the TV,……… ?
12.Let’s have a cup of tea,……… ?
