WHAT IS

SOLAR SYSTEM?
- the collection of eight planets and
their moons in orbit around the sun,
together with smaller bodies in the
form of asteroids, meteoroids, and
comets.

SOLAR SYSTEM?

HYPOTHESIS
EXPLAINING THE

SYSTEM
CAMERON’S
HYPOTHESIS
ALASTAIR G. W. CAMERON

Cameron's hypothesis (from 1962 and 1963),

the protosun has a mass of about 1–2 Suns with
a diameter of around 100,000 AU is
gravitationally unstable, collapses, and breaks
up into smaller subunits. ... He also formulated
the Big Splat or Giant Impactor Hypothesis for
the origin of the Moon.
THE SUPERNOVA
HYPOTHESIS
FRED HOYLE’S HYPOTHESIS

An existing hypothesis proposed that a

supernova at the end of the Cretaceous had
caused the extinction of dinosaurs. Supernovas
throw off heavy elements like iridium — so the
hypothesis seemed to fit with the team's
discovery of high iridium levels.
NEBULAR
HYPOTHESIS
ASTRONOMER A. J. R. PRENTICE
The first version of the nebular
hypothesis was proposed in 1755 by the German
philosopher Immanuel Kant and modified in 1796
by Pierre Laplace.
According to this theory, the Sun and all the
planets of our Solar System began as a giant cloud
of molecular gas and dust. Then, about 4.57 billion
years ago, something happened that caused the
cloud to collapse.
TIDAL THEORY
Proposed by Sir James H. Jeans
(1877–1946) and Sir Harold
Jeffreys.
Tidal theory Theory of the origin of the
solar system, involving the approach near
the Sun of another star. This set up tidal
forces, and the instability of the Sun
resulted in part of its mass being torn off
to form the planets.
INTERSTELLAR
CLOUD THEORY
Soviet astronomer Otto Schmidt
In 1943, the Soviet astronomer Otto
Schmidt proposed that the Sun, in its
present form, passed through a dense
interstellar cloud, emerging enveloped in a
cloud of dust and gas, from which the
planets eventually formed
The Chamberlin-
Moulton model
The Chamberlin–Moulton planetesimal hypothesis
was proposed in 1905 by geologist Thomas
Chrowder Chamberlin and astronomer Forest
Ray Moulton to describe the formation of the
Solar System. It was proposed as a replacement
for the Laplacian version of the nebular
hypothesis that had prevailed since the 19th
century.
