INTRODUCTION
• DNA storage was first introduced by Mikhail Neiman in 19
65.
• Its main idea is to store data in base sequence of DN
A.
• It uses simple mathematical calculation.
Why DNA Storage?
• The demand for data storage devices is increasing day by day as
more and more data is generated every day.
• Presently devices such as optical discs, portable hard drives, a
nd flash drives are used to store data.
• As the data increases, the current data storage technology w
ould not be enough to store data in future as data is growing
every day.
• To backup our data, we are using various hard drives and big data
centers to store the important data.
• DNA type of storage system is more compact than current magne
tic tape or hard drive storage systems due to the high data storag
e in DNA.
• Currently it was reported that in 1 gram of DNA 215 petabytes (215
million gigabytes) could be stored.
DNA v/s Other Storage Devices
How data is stored in DNA?
• In classical computers data is stored in binary form.
• But in DNA storage we use 4 digit code i.e A,T,C,G.
• Binary data is converted to DNA data.
• Every 0 becomes A or C. Every 1 becomes T or G.
Encoding and Decoding
Advantages
• Huge amount of data can be stored.
• Stores digital files without electricity for thousands of years.
• They are highly secure, compact and easy to carry.
• Environment friendly.
Disadvantages
• Cost is high
• The retrieval process is slower than that of a personal co
mputers.
• Many types of errors are associated with the current mach
ines dealing with DNA.
Conclusion
• Thus, using DNA for data storage, it is possible to store h
uge amount of data in very less size.
• As DNA can retain data for millions of years, it is possible
to store data for a long time.
• This technique can be used in future to store the whole dat
a of the various companies in very small space.
