Flag of Japan
• In Japanese is called Nisshōki which means solar flag or Hinomaru
which means solar disk.
• It displays a large red disc in the center above the white area.
• In the 13th century, a Buddhist monk named Nichiren presented this flag
to a Shogun who tried to break Mongul's attacks.
• During the power struggle between the Taira and Minamoto tribes, this
sun symbol was once found in a folding fan carried by the Samurai.
• During the Meiji Restoration era in 1868, this flag was regarded as a
national flag.
• Its use on land only became official on 13 August 1999.
• Famous variations of the flag show the sun with 16 red rays, used by the
Japanese armed forces until the end of World War II.
• This flag is now used by Japanese navy.
