:
A Film Analysis
Thesis:
Through Pulp Fiction and his other works,
Quentin Tarantino revolutionised the
aspect of the ensemble cast and created a
trademark style of direction that has been
mimicked by numerous directors in
modern day Hollywood.
Summary:
“Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield are
hitmen with a penchant for philosophical
discussions. Their storyline is interwoven
with those of their boss, gangster
Marsellus Wallace ; his actress wife, Mia ;
struggling boxer Butch Coolidge ; master
fixer Winston Wolfe and a pair of armed
robbers, "Pumpkin" and "Honey Bunny".”
The Ensemble Cast:
● Many big name actors, but none of them were
clear leads
● The story is heavily split between the different
characters
● The non-linear storytelling adds to this
Tarantino Staples
● Realistic & naturalistic dialogue, along with
intense scenes and lines
● Violent themes in close to all of his films, themes
where the Antagonist is seen as the Protagonist
● “Shaky camera” walking shots, 4th wall breaks
● Tie-ins and references to other Tarantino movies
(Big Kahuna burger, Red Apple Cigarettes, In-
trunk shots, Samuel L. Jackson, himself)
● Dance scenes, seemingly intentional “goofs”
● Close-ups of feet and record player needle dropping

Tarantino’s Impact
● Strong references to pop culture not seen before
on the big screen
● Use of profanity and lack of censorship, pushes
the limits of movie language and footage
● Immense rise in non-linear storytelling
● Cultural impacts from resulting parodies
