Heat Exchangers

Heat Exchanger
 Device that transfers energy from one
fluid to another across a solid surface.

 Design and analysis consideration:

– Convection
– Conduction
– Radiation (if not insulated)
Uses of Heat Exchangers
 Refrigeration
 Air Conditioning
 Space Heating
 Electricity Generation
 Nuclear Power Plants
 Chemical Processing
 Automotive Radiators
Types
Heat Exchanger Analysis
 Rating
– Rate of heat transfer
– Change in temperature of the two fluids
– Pressure drop across heat exchanger.
 Sizing
– designing a new HE considering pressure
drop and heat transfer rate.
– Selecting from already available heat
exchangers
Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

 Has a series of tubes connected on each end to

a tube sheet.
 Tubes are encased in a shell assembly.
 End bonnets control water flow.

Plate Heat Exchanger
 Metal plates transfer heat between fluids.
Air Cooler Exchanger
 Circulated air is
used to transfer
heat.
 Fans are used to
propel cooler air
through fin tube
bundles.
Double Pipe Heat Exchanger
 Fluids of different
temperatures flow
through concentric
inner and outer tubes
for heat transfer.
 Simple effective
design.
