Ecuador seeks to double cocoa

Yaguachi, Guayas.- The President of the Republic, Lenín Moreno, signed a


decree on Monday to begin the Program for the Competitive Improvement of
Cocoa and its Derivatives.

• Increasing exports of cocoa and its derivatives
from $ 760 million - figure achieved in 2018 -
to at least $ 1.5 billion until 2030 is one of the
actions that includes the 'Program for the
Competitive Improvement of Cocoa and its
Derivatives', that the government launched on
Monday with the signing of a presidential
decree that raised the initiatives announced to
public policy.

• In addition, it is expected to generate 12,000 new
jobs in the sector to add them to the 120,000
that currently exist; and convert at least 200,000
hectares (Ha) to cocoa production.
• The president of the Republic, Lenín Moreno , did
it during an event in Yaguachi (Guayas), where he
also announced that they already have an
investment for the sector of $ 600 million for the
next 10 years.

• Ecuador is the third largest cocoa producer in the world
with 8% of the production behind the African Ivory
Coast and Ghana; and the first producer of fine aroma
cocoa with 65%.
• Xavier Lazo , Minister of Agriculture and Livestock
(MAG), highlighted the actions planned by the
Government and noted that a new cocoa boom is
being seen.

• "Out of every $ 100 that the agricultural sector produces, $
8 comes out of cocoa," said Lazo, who said that within the
plan it will strengthen the association because 96% of
cocoa producers have less than 10 hectares, that is, that He

cocoa will also be promoted.
