TRANSFORMATION OF A POEM INTO A SHORT STORY
ASSIGNMENT 01
STILL I RISE

• Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 – may 28, 2014) was

an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist.
She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays,
several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays,
movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years.
• Angelou is best known for her series of seven
autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early
adult experiences. The first, I know why the caged bird
sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought
her international recognition and acclaim.
A GIRL WHO ASKED WHY
The girl asked her mother, “why should I learn to cook?”
Mother said, “so that you can feed yourself when required.”
The girl said “fair enough”, and learned to cook.
After some time, her mother wanted to teach her household
work.

The girl again asked, “Why?”

Mother said “So that you can be self-dependent.”

The girl said “Fair enough!”, and she learned the household
chores.
Her parents told her that they will be marrying her off soon.
She asked, “Why?”

“Because all girls get married at this age.” Said the parents.
“You will not feel comfortable around so many men”
answered another woman.
But everybody agrees that the girl “who asked why”
became the first female scholar.
RELEVANCE TO SOCIAL CONTEXT – WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

• Through women empowerment, it can be possible to change the male

dominated country into the equally dominated country of rich economy.
Empowering women may easily help to grow each and every member of
the family without any extra effort. A woman is considered to be
responsible for everything in the family so she can better solve all the
problems from her own end. Empowerment of the women would
automatically bring empowerment of everyone.
• Women empowerment is the better treatment of any big or small
problems related to human being, economy or environment. In few last
years, the advantages of the women empowerment are coming out in
front of us. Women are being more conscious about their health,
education, career, job and responsibilities towards family, society and
country. They are taking part in the every area and showing their great
interest in each field. Finally, after long years of hard struggle they are
getting their rights to go ahead on the right track.
