What is Dance?

What is the purpose of
dancing?
• Area where the performers occupy and where they move.
• It is divided into four different aspects, also known as spatial
elements;
a. Direction – dance can travel in any direction, can go forward,
side, backward, diagonal, and so on. They can also face any
direction while executing a single movement or complicated
actions.
b. Size – movements can be varies by doing larger or smaller
actions.
c. Level – movements can be done in a high, medium or low level.
d. Focus – performers may change their focus by looking at
different directions.
Movements are executed in
varying tempo or speed. It can
be faster or slower than the
normal beat. When a sequence
of a movement is done in
varying tempos, it creates a
rhythmic pattern.
• The movements are propelled by force. Dancers uses different
energies and a variety of these to perform a certain dance.

c. vibratory
d. swinging
e. suspended
f. collapsing
g. snappy
f. floppy
It refers to how the body is molded in
space or the configuration of body parts.
Body shapes can be from wide to narrow
and from high to low. They can also be
symmetrical and asymmetrical.

In this element, a group of
dancers perform movements
in different group shapes.
They are arranged in ways
that are wide, narrow,
rounded,angular,symmetrical
, or asymmetrical viewed as a
total picture.

What makes a good dance?
What is a Phrase?
• Its usually a single phrase consists of eight
counts.
• A combination of a single movement to one
another or several others, they form a unit.
When units are placed together, they form a
section of the dance, when sections are placed
together they make up a whole dance.
What is a Motif?
•It’s the theme of the dance.
•It’s the message you want to convey your
dance.
•Oftentimes, dances with theme are hard to
forget rather than merely dancing.
