INTRODUCTION
• Chemical Hazard is occupational hazard caused by exposure to
chemicals in the workplace.
• Exposure to chemicals in the workplace can cause acute or long-
term detrimental health effects.

1ST RULE: “KNOW WHAT YOU ARE WORKING

WITH & HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF & OTHERS”
ROUTES TO EXPOSURE
INHALATION: Breathing. In the lungs, very tiny blood vessels are in
constant contact with the air we breathe in. As a result, airborne
contaminants can be easily absorbed through this tissue. In the
occupational environment, this is generally the most important route of
entry.

INGESTION: Swallowing. Ingestion of toxic materials may occur as a

result of eating in a contaminated work area.

ABSORPTION: Substances that contact the eye and the skin may be
either absorbed into the body or cause local effects

INJECTION: Taking in biological or chemical substances into the body

when the skin is accidentally punctured with a sharp object (e.g.
contaminated needle).
LONG TERM RISKS
PREVENTION TECHNIQUES
• Follow Label requirements.
• Educate workers on the
effects of hazardous
chemicals.
• Determine how employees
might be at risk and evaluate
them.
• Identify hazards by carrying
out a workplace risk
assessment and record and
review hazards annually.
• Handle, store, and get rid of
hazardous materials safely
and according to approved
procedures.
• Use proper protective gear
while using chemicals.
• Be prepared for emergency
and keep first-aid equipment
at hand.
