INTRODUCTION TO PAVEMENT DESIGN

• A pavement consisting of a few layers of

pavement material is constructed over a
prepared soil sub grade to serve as a
carriageway. The pavement carries the wheel
loads and transfer the load stresses through a
wider area on the soil sub grade below.
An ideal pavement should meet the
following requirements

1. Long design life with low maintenance cost,

2. Produce least noise from moving vehicles,
3. Smooth surface to provide comfort to road
users even at high speed,
4. Adequate coefficient of friction to prevent
skidding of vehicles,
5. Structurally strong to withstand all types of
stresses imposed upon it.
6. Sufficient thickness to distribute the wheel
load stresses to a safe value on the sub-
grade soil,
7. Impervious surface, so that sub-grade soil is
well protected.
1.) Flexible pavements
2.) Rigid pavement
FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
1.Flexible pavement are those, which have low or
negligible flexural strength and are rather flexible in
their structural action under loads.

2.The flexible pavement layers transmit the vertical

or compressive stresses to the lower layers by
grain to grain transfer through the points of contact
in the granular structure.
RIGID PAVEMENT
1.The rigid pavement are made of Portland cement
concrete-either plain, reinforced or Pre-stressed concrete.
2.Rigid pavements are placed either directly on the
prepared sub-grade or on a single layer of granular or
stabilized material.
3.In rigid pavement, load is distributed by the slab action,
and the pavement behaves like an elastic plate resting on
a viscous medium.
PROCEDURE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT

1. Prime coat
2. Seal coat
3. Surface course
4. Base course
5. Sub base course
6. Sub grade
