EXOGENIC

PROCESSES
EXOGENIC PROCESSES

Geological processes that occur

on the surface of the earth such as
weatherring,erosion,mass wasting
and sendimentation (including the
role of ocean basins in the
formation of sedimentary rocks.)
WEATHERING

Mechanical and
chemical processes
that break down and
sculpts rocks.
2 TYPES:
 PHYSICAL (MECHANICAL
WEATHERING)
-Occurs when physical forces break rock
into smaller and smaller pieces without
changing the rocks mineral composition
CHEMICAL WEATHERING

-DECOMPOSITION OF ROCKS
DUE TO CHEMICAL REACTION
OCCURRING BETWEEN THE
MINERALS IN THE ROCKS AND
THE ENVIRONMENT.
PHYSICAL WEATHERING
PRECURSORS:
1.Thermal and Pressure changes
2.Wind and Waves
3.Freeze and Thaw
4.Organic Activity
5.Anthropogenic
CHEMICAL WETHERING
PRECUSTORS:
1.Hydration/Hyrolysis- Mineral with
the rocks combine with H2O
2.Carbonation – Minerals in rocks.
3.Oxidation – O2 combines with
others minerals in the rocks
iron,Aliminum etc.
EROSION

Involesthe movement of the

weathered rock (soil,sand or
pebbles) from their site of weathering
by the AGENTS of erosion such as
wind,moving water,ice and gravity.
Always follow after weathering.
EROSION AND TRANSPORT UNDER
GRAVITY (MASS MOVEMENT)
There is a spectrum of processes of
movement material downslope. A
landslide is a coherent mass of
bedrock that has moved downslope
without significantly breaking up in
the process.
