• is a device that converts motive power (mechanical energy)
into electrical power for use in an external circuit.
• Sources of mechanical energy include steam turbines,
water turbines, internal combustion engines and even hand cranks. The first electromagnetic generator, the Faraday disk, was invented in 1831 by British scientist Michael Faraday. DIESEL POWER PLANT Basic Working Principle
• If a coil is rotated in a magnetic
field, a current will be induced in the coil. The altogether principle of AC motor is Electromagnetism. • The strength of this induced current depends upon the number of magnetic lines of force passing through the coil.
• The number of lines of
magnetic force passing through the coil will be maximum when the plane of the coil is perpendicular to the lines of magnetic force. • The armature is arranged so that it can rotate freely in the magnetic field. As the armature turns, the wire loops cut through magnetic field lines and induced E.M.F will be produced.
• These e.m.f developed by the
generator depends upon the length of the wire rotating in the field. Increasing the number of loops in the armature increases the the wire length thereby increasing the induced e.m.f When a generator is connected in a closed circuit, the induced e.m.f generates an electric current As the loop rotates, the strength and the direction of the current changes . As the loop continues to rotate the segment that was moving upward begins to move downwards and reverses the direction of e.m.f and the current in the loop. • The change in direction takes place each time the loop turns through 180 degrees . Thus e.m.f and the current changes smoothly from zero to some maximum values back to zero during each half-turn of the loop.
