Define What is Computer?

A machine for performing calculations automatically. A computer is a programmable

machine designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of
arithmetic or logical operations. The particular sequence of operations can be
changed readily, allowing the computer to solve more than one kind of problem.

Different Types of Computer?

Since the invention of computers from first generation and fourth generation
computers, they have been classified according to their types and how they operate
that is input, process and output information. Below you will get a brief discussion on
various types of Computers we have
Computer types can be divided into 3 categories according to electronic nature. Types
of computers are classified according to how a particular Computer functions. These
computer types are:

1. Analog Computers:

Analogue types of Computer uses what is known as analogue signals that are represented
by a continuous set of varying voltages and are used in scientific research centers?,
hospitals and flight centers
With analogue types of computer no values are represented by physical measurable
quantities e.g. voltages. Analogue computer types program arithmetic and logical
operations by measuring physical changes i.e. temperatures or pressure.

2. Digital Computers

With these types of computers operation are on electrical input that can attain
two inputs, states of ON=1 and state of OFF = 0. With digital type of computers
data is represented by digital of 0 and 1 or off state and on state. Digital computer
type recognizes data by counting discrete signal of (0 0r 1), they are high speed
programmable; they compute values and stores results.

3. Hybrid Computer

Hybrid computer types are very unique, in the sense that they combined both analogue
and digital features and operations. With Hybrid computers operate by using digital to
analogue convertor and analogue to digital convertor. By linking the two types of
computer above you come up with this new computer type called Hybrid.

4 . Main frame Computer

Mainframe computer systems can be called the predecessor of servers because they
could actually support multi users though as efficiently as the servers. Usually, a main
frame would occupy an entire room and could cost over million dollars.

5.Mini Frame Computer

A Mini frame computer is a computer that allows up to 6 users to use the

same physical PC hardware all at the same running independently of
each other .

6. Super Computer

A supercomputer is a computer that performs at or near the currently highest

operational rate for computers. A supercomputer is typically used for scientific and
engineering applications that must handle very large databases or do a great amount
of computation (or both).
At any given time, there are usually a few well-publicized supercomputers that operate
at extremely high speeds. The term is also sometimes applied to far slower (but still
impressively fast) computers.

7. Server Computer

Most of us are very well acquainted with the word computer server. We know that in
all organizations, schools and colleges there is a computer server, to which all the
computers are connected.

8. Wearable Computer

Wearable computers are computers that are worn on the body. This type of wearable
technology has been used in health monitoring systems, information technologies and
media development. Wearable computers are especially useful for applications that
require computational support while the user's hands, voice, eyes, arms or attention are
actively engaged with the physical environment.

9. Laptop Computer

A laptop computer, usually called a notebook computer by manufacturers, is a battery- or

AC-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be
transported and conveniently used in temporary spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries,
temporary offices, and at meetings. A laptop typically weighs less than 5 pounds and is 3
inches or less in thickness. Among the best-known makers of laptop computers are IBM,
Apple, Compaq, Dell, and Toshiba.

10. Desktop Computer

A desktop computer is a personal computer that is designed to fit conveniently

on top of a typical office desk. A desktop computer typically comes in several
units that are connected together during installation: (1) the processor, which can
be in a micro tower or minitower designed to fit under the desk or in a unit that
goes on top of the desk, (2) the display monitor, (3) and input devices - usually a
keyboard and a mouse. Today, almost all desktop computers include a built-in
modem, a CD-ROM drive, a multi-gigabyte magnetic storage drive, and
sometimes a diskette drive. At home, most desktop computer users also purchase
a printer. In businesses and increasingly at home, desktop computers can be
interconnected and can share resources such as printers by being connected to a
local area network (LAN).
