Superoxide, a reactive oxygen species, enhances calcium entry through L-type calcium channels in the renal afferent arteriole. Experiments were conducted on isolated and perfused afferent arterioles to measure calcium entry under different conditions. The results demonstrated that superoxide stimulates L-type calcium channel activity in vascular smooth muscle cells of the afferent arteriole, increasing calcium influx. This may contribute to the effects of oxidative stress on renal hemodynamics and hypertension.
