faith or what we believe at. History of the CREED -As the Christian church spreads throughout the Roman old in the 1st century and as the first leaders died, there was a need for the Church to have a basic statement of beliefs, as false teachers and false beliefs penetrates inside the Church. Some of the Churches had a few books of the New Testament, perhaps some of the letters of St. Paul, or none of the four gospels…but NONE of the Churches had a complete New Testament….they needed a standard to judge whether a teaching was TRUTH or a heresy. -The early Christians also realized that new people didn’t have to know everything before they could be baptized and accepted as believers…the very reason that early Churches wanted a brief statement of what they believed is most essential. Churches in different cities and regions made their own lists which had many points in common, since all the Churches had traditions tracing back to the apostles in one way or the other. Irenaeus (200 AD-Greek) Tertullian (220 AD-Latin, written in North Africa). Marcellus (320 AD-Asia Minor) Rufinos (390 AD-Northern Italy). Augustine (400 AD-North Africa), and was standard in Gaul in 650 AD. Pirminius (750 AD, identical to the current Creed today-Switzerland).
