HISTORY

• Apple’s iPhone 5s started the whole

smartphone biometrics saga with the
introduction of Touch ID. The fingerprint
scanner element is now ubiquitous,
embedded in home buttons, mounted on
the back side of mobile phones and even
placed on the side beneath the home
button of handsets. Naturally, the
development of faster and more accurate
fingerprint readers led to the makings of
newer ways of unlocking your smartphone.
WAYS OF AUTHENTICATION

• Pattern
• Pin
• Touch ID
• Facial Recognization
• Iris scanner
INTRODUCTION

• After years of rumors and prototypes, an in-display fingerprint scanner is finally shipping
in a major phone from a major company. The international Vivo X21 marks the first time
this technology has been sold in India and other countries, as well as the first time it’s
been a standard feature anywhere in the world.

• In-display fingerprint scanners allow for smartphones with thin bezels and high screen-to-
body ratios by integrating biometric authentication into the display itself. You could just
put the scanner on the back of the phone, of course, as companies like Samsung, Google,
and LG have done for years, but that’s less convenient in many situations.

HOW IT WORKS ?
• The foundation of Vivo’s in-display fingerprint scanner is an optical technology, rather than
resistive, capacitive, or even ultrasonic sound. Optical fingerprint readers aren’t a new
technology, some of the earlier designs were based on this idea, but Vivo’s approach makes
use of some very modern technological trends.

• When a user touches the screen, the OLED display emits light to illuminate the user’s finger.
This light is then reflected and captured by a sensor embedded below the display element. To
ensure an accurate reading, the display also requires a small amount of pressure to be applied
to the screen’s surface, which is mediated by a traditional touch element.
WORKING OF TOUCH ID(CONDITION 2)
ADVANTAGES OF USFS

• Easy for authorize accessing as it creates a sample of the finger to be scan and compares
with the previously store template.
• Now there is trend of bazelless smartphone (18:9) , we can still get our loved position of
fingerprint scanner at the front of the screen.
• It’s response time is 1.2-1.5 sec which is not that slow as it is the first generation of
fingerprint scanner.
• It is still more reliable authentication source compares to newly introduced facial
recognition.
DISADVANTAGES

• This technology works only with the OLED or Amoled displays and it
doesn’t work with LCD displays.
• The cost is high as compare to the Touch Id.
• The cost of the handsets using this technology is high.
FUTURE SCOPE

• Hot on the heels of its in-display fingerprint

scanner announcements CES 2018 and its X20
Plus UD handset,Vivo has unveiled its new
APEX concept smartphone that builds on the
cutting edge fingerprint technology. The APEX
boasts the company’s Half-Screen In-Display
Fingerprint Scanning Technology, which as the
name suggests means that the entire bottom
half of the display works as a fingerprint scanner.
Vivo is the first company to demonstrate such a
technology.
CONCLUSION

This technology is very useful to achieve more screen to body ratio. Means
we can get more screen to body ratio. Also some of the latest flagships are
missing the fingerprint scanner because they are lacking in design and
unable to find the position to place it , so they are giving more priority to
facial recognition.
But still the fingerprint scanner is more secure than the face id , because the
In Display Fingerprint Scanner we are going to see the new beginning.
