PURPOSE OF CREATION:
• Most important connection between the
Charles Bridge
 Oldest bridge still standing on the Vltara River and the second
oldest bridge in Czech Republic
 The construction was commisioned by Czech king and Holy Roman
Emperor Charles IV
 Built to replace Judith Bridge that had been damaged by floods in
1342
 Built of sandstone blocks, flanked at each end by fortified towers
(Lesser Town Bridge Towers and Old Town Bridge Tower)
 From 1683 to 1928, 30 statues of saints were carved to decorate the
bridge, the most famous is which the statue of St. John of Nepomuk
 According to legends, the builders decided to strengthen the
bridge by adding raw eggs into the mortar. Historians still has not
come any conclusive agreement whether it is true or not.
