Objective :
 Designing a more permeable and porous pavement
which can stay intact under any kind of load.
 To reduce clogging, which appears to be a big
problem in conventional pavements
 Attempt to infiltrate total storm water runoff.
 To Achieve all of the above objectives by reusing or
recycled materials
 Keeping the project as Eco-friendly as possible
What is thirsty concrete?
 A type of concrete that “drinks” water on its surface is
being marketed to areas where flash flooding and puddles
are a problem.
 Topmix can help rapidly remove water from roadways,
preventing the potentially dangerous buildup of standing
water. As it is absorbed, storm water is filtered through a
porous layer of pebbles, removing petroleum
hydrocarbons and other pollutants commonly found on
roadways before the water is ultimately returned to the
water table
 The Topmix Permeable concrete by Tarmac can absorb
880 gallons of water in 60 sec, one sq area according to
a recent article in the Daily Mail.
 “Permeable concrete allows surface water to freely
drain through the wearing surface to the underlying
ground with the ability to act as a reservoir during
periods of high downfall,” the company said in its
Permeable Concrete Solutions Guide.
 During some periods this characteristic can aid in
delaying the discharge of surface water into water
courses or drainage systems reducing the risk of
overwhelming systems and causing flash flooding.
During periods of rising temperatures and intense
rainfall, water stored within the system evaporates
creating a cooling effect reducing surface temperatures.
 Surface water flooding
 The inability of our existing drainage systems to
cope with changing weather conditions was
brought sharply into focus by the unprecedented
floods experienced across
 Great Britain in 2007 and highlighted again, more
recently, by serious flooding in the winter of
2013/14. The Environment Agency estimated that
over two thirds of the 57,000 homes affected by
the 2007 floods were not flooded by swollen rivers,
but by water running off paving or overflowing
from the overloaded drainage systems serving
them
 Poor water quality

 High maintenance costs

 Reduced groundwater levels

 Increased risk of contamination

 Ibrahim H.A and Razak H.A (2016) have studied the
addition of palm oil clinker on properties of pervious
concrete.
 In this study, Palm oil clinker is taken as the coarse
aggregate in the fabrication of pervious concrete.
 Here, natural aggregate are replaced by Palm oil clinker
ranging from 0-100%.
 The test results indicated that substitution with POC
decreases the strength of the material but porosity and
permeability increases.
It is noted that loss in strength was about 65% is
observed for full replacement. However, replacement of
palm oil clinker at 25% shows better performance among
all.

Presentation
 Minimises urban impact on natural water cycle
 Filters petroleum hydrocarbons from dirty road
water
 Provides natural groundwater recharge in urban
environments
 Reduced pollution in storm water
 More efficient use of land (reduced footprint)
 Reduced heat build-up and retention lowers UHI
effect
 Pervious concrete's presence in the concrete industry is
going to continue to grow. Factors such as the Green
Building movement, the Clean Water Act, and the rising
price and changes in the asphalt industry will help push
its growth
 pervious concrete will eventually become the pavement
of choice.
 the greatest market potential for pervious is parking
lots.
 A pervious sound wall absorbs sounds like traditional
concrete but offers a lighter concrete mix than regular
concrete.
 pervious concrete as a structural drainage fill behind
retaining walls.
