BAD ETHNICS

HealthSouth

Richard Scrushy, the CEO, organized and directed this financial

hoax. This scandal involved coming up with fictitious transactions
and accounts to boost the company’s earnings. The fraud
embezzled $1.4 billion which was reported as the company’s
earnings from 1996 to 2003. He had almost gotten away with it,
but the prosecutors wouldn’t let up and he was eventually
convicted in 2006.

GOOD ETHNIC'S
Starbucks
A year after Kevin Johnson was appointed CEO, he
was put to a true leader ship test. At one Starbucks
franchise two black business men were arrested for
refusing to leave because they were waiting for an
associate, they had done nothing illegal or wrong
but yet the manager called the police to have them
arrested, the arrest was caught on video and wen
viral. After the video went up Kevin Johnson said,
“The video shot by customers is very hard to watch
and the actions in it are not representative of our
Starbucks Mission and Values. Creating an
environment that is both safe and welcoming for
everyone is paramount for every store. Regretfully,
our practices and training led to a bad outcome—
the basis for the call to the Philadelphia police
department was wrong.”
Facebook

The 2016 election season generated many headlines, some of which are notable for being
blatantly false. Fake news ranged from, “the Pope endorsed Donald Trump” all the way to
“Hilary Clinton is running a child sex ring out of a pizza shop.” After this people started
believing that fake news could have altered the results of the election, CEO of Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg downplayed the problem but when he realized this was becoming an issue
he started locking down on it. Facebook is taking the problem seriously, albeit with a great
deal of caution. They have introduced efforts to help users spot fake news and inject
indicators of trust (disputed tags) into their posts in partnership with a few institutions. They
have also banned fake news sites from advertising on the network.
