Storage device
A data storage device is a device for
recording information ,process
information or both.
Classification of storage device
Primary storage device Secondary storage device

 Primary storage or the  Secondary storage is

commonly referred commonly referred to as hard
Random Access Memory disk
 It is volatile storage  It is a non-volatile storage

 It is the memory which is and is capable of storing large

amounts of data
directly accessible to the
 it refers to the inability of the
CPU. The CPU constantly
reads instructions from this CPU to access it directly. It is
memory accessed by the CPU through
intermediary devices like the
processor cache.
Primary storage device

RAM(random access memory)

Stores information that is being processed and offloads it at a very fast rate to
the motherboard of the computer which allows the user to access the
information with the mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc.

Processor Cache
The cache memory transfers data at lightning fast speeds so it can be processed
by the cores in the processor. The larger processes involving software and
operating system files are handled by the cache memory.
Processor Registers
Primarily used by the processor to handle calculations used to operate the
programs. It is the smallest of all primary storage devices. They hold around 32
to 64 bits, which is enough for simple processes such as math calculations
Secondary storage device
Floppy Disk
A floppy disk is a thin flexible medium of magnetic storage which is encased in
a square plastic shell. A floppy disk is read and written by a floppy disk drive

Compact Disk
Compact disk, more commonly referred to as a CD, is an optical disk used to store
digital data
Hard Disk Drive
A hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device used to store
digitally encoded data on rotating platters having magnetic surfaces.
Today, the capacity has risen to more than a 100 gigabytes, and is still
increasing by the day.

USB Flash Drive

The USB flash drives are removable as well as rewritable. Although

they are smaller than a floppy disk, their storage capacity ranges from
64 MB to 128 GB.

 Memory Cards
Flash memory cards are solid electronic flash memory devices used
to store data in digital format. These cards are often used in hand-held
as well as mobile computers.
Digital Versatile Disk
Digital versatile disk more commonly referred to as DVD, is an optical
storage device used for data storage in computer technology. Although
they share the same dimensions as the CDs, DVDs have the capacity to
store six times more data than the compact disks

Blu-Ray Disks
This technology uses a blue-violet laser to read the data, and hence is
referred to as blu-ray disk. These optical disks have overshadowed other
optical storage devices due to their high storage capacity.
How to improve
Drive Performance
Free up Disk Space

Why to use disk cleanup?

• Remove temporary Internet files.
• Remove downloaded program files (such as
Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).
• Empty the Recycle Bin.
• Remove Windows temporary files such as error
reports.
• Remove optional Windows components that you
don't use.
• Remove installed programs that you no longer use.
• Remove unused restore points and shadow copies
from
System Restore.
Steps to use disk cleanup :

1) Click Start  All Programs  Accessories  System

Tools  Disk Cleanup. (Note : If several drives are available,
you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to
clean.)

2) When Disk Cleanup has calculated how much space you can
free, in the Disk Cleanup dialog box, scroll through the
content of the Files to delete list.

3) Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete,
and then click OK.

4) For more options, such as cleaning up System Restore and

Shadow copy files click Clean up system files, then click the
More Options tab.

5) When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the

specified files, click Yes.
Defragment Your Hard Disk

Why to Defragment your hard disk?

• Speeds up computer performance

• Arranges all files together in an orders

When to use Defragment utility?

• You add a large number of files.

• Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.
• You install new programs or a new version of Windows
Steps to use disk cleanup :

1) Click Start  All Programs  Accessories  System

Tools  Disk Defragmenter.
( Disk Defragmenter dialogue box appears)

2) Click the drives that you want to defragment, and then

click the Analyze button

3) To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the

Defragment disk button.

4) To display detailed information about the defragmented

disk or partition, click View Report

5) To close the View Report dialog box, click Close

Defragment you Hard Disk on Boot
Why to Defragment your hard disk on boot?

• Makes windows start quickly

• decrease the time it takes for your computer to boot

Steps to use disk cleanup :

1) Hold the Windows Key and press R.

2) Type Regedit
3) Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\
BootOptimizeFunction
4) Ensure the Enable string value is set as Y.
5) Exit the Registry
6) Reboot
Detect and Repair Disk Errors
Why to detect and repair errors?

• Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and

sometimes make data writing
difficult or even impossible

•Will help in faster performance

Steps :
1) Follow Start > My Computer
2) In My Computer right-click the hard disk you want to
scan and click Properties
3) Click the Tools tab
4) Click Check Now
5) Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
check box
6) Click Start
Optimize Your Pagefile.sys
Why to use pagefile?

•The pagefile is used as another cache as well as RAM.

• The pagefile stores data on commonly used applications

Steps :

1) Right click on My Computer and select Properties

2) Select the Advanced tab
3) Under Performance choose the Settings button
4) Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual
Memory select Change
5) Highlight the drive containing your page file and make
the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum
Size of the file
Disable Indexing Services
Why to disable indexing services

• Helps in faster search

• Reduces load on the processor

Steps:

1) Go to Start
2) Click Settings
3) Click Control Panel
4) Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5) Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6) Uncheck the Indexing services
7) Click Next
Speedup Folder Browsing
Why to speedup folder browsing

• Reduces delay while you open My computer

• Windows XP automatically searches for network files and

printers every time you open Windows Explorer which
causes delay.

Steps :

1) Go to My Computer, click Tools > Folder Options.

2) Click the View tab.
3) Now find Automatically search for network3
folders and printers and uncheck the box.
4) Press OK
Optimize Display Settings

2) Click on the Appearance tab.
3) Click Effects
4) Uncheck the following:
Show shadows under menus.
Show windows contents while dragging.
5) Press Ok and Close the dialogue boxes.
Remove Unused Fonts
Why to Remove unused Fonts

• Fonts uses system resources

• Deleting unused fonts will improve system performance

Steps :

1) Open Control Panel

2) Open Fonts folder
3) Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory
Disable Performance Counters

• Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which

monitors several areas of your PC’s performance.

• These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a

good option.

1) Download and install the Extensible Performance

Counter List

2) Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible

performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance
counters enabled’ checkbox.
Use a Flash Memory to Boost Performance
