 St. Petersburg is founded on 27 May 1703 by
Peter the Great, and currently counts almost 5
million inhabitants.
 It is the most northly situated million city,
situated on the Neva River, at the head of
the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea.
 “window on Europe” , “window to the West”
 In 2003 Petersburg celebrated its 300 years
existence.
 The most difficult period was siege in WW II
lasted 872 days (from September 1941 to
January 1944)
CLIMATE
 In June and July, during the so called “white
nights”, it is almost continously light.
 The average temperature in summer is about
20 degrees Celsius, in winter between 5 and
-10 (sometimes might drop to -25).

NAME
 Till the October revolution in 1917 St.
Petersburg was the capital of Russia.
 In 1914, after the outbreak of WW I, the
Imperial Goverment rename the city
Petrograd.
 During the communist era – Leningrad.
 In 1991 the population chose back the old,
original name Saint Petersburg
CULTURE
 St. Petersburg is culture capital of Russia.
 Many composers and writers come from here.
 There are many famous museums, churches
and cathedrals, palaces, etc.
