LESSON 5: EQUATIONS

TRANSFORMABLE TO
QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
OBJECTIVES:
Solves equations transformable to quadratic
equations (including rational algebraic
equation). (M9AL-Ic-d-1
a. Transform quadratic equation into standard
form
b. Find the solutions of equations
transformable to quadratic equations
c. Show cooperation and display interests
when working in groups.
SOLVING QUADRATIC
EQUATIONS THAT ARE NOT
WRITTEN IN STANDARD FORM
EXAMPLE 1: FIND THE ROOTS
−𝒙 𝟒
OF =
𝒙−𝟑 𝒙
−𝒙 𝟒
SOLUTION: =
𝒙−𝟑 𝒙
(-x)(x) = ( x – 3)(4) Cross Multiply
-x2 = 4x – 12 Simplify
-x2 – 4x + 12 = 0 Apply APE
x2 + 4x – 12 = 0 Apply MPE
(x + 6)(x – 2) = 0 Factor out
x + 6 = 0, x – 2 = 0 Equate each factor to 0
x1 = -6, x2 = 2 Solve for x
∴ The roots are -6 and 2
