Use the figure on the next
slide to identify and name the
following terms related to ʘ O:
1. a radius
2. a diameter
3. a chord
4. a semicircle
5. a minor arc
6. a major arc
7. 2 central angles
8. 2 inscribed angles
1. a radius
𝐷O, 𝑂C, 𝐴O, 𝑂B

circle)
2. a diameter
DC, AB
(a chord passing through
the center)

(less than a semicircle)
2. a major arc
ACD, CBA,BDC, DAB
(greater than a
semicircle)
1. central angles
AOC, BOC, DOA, DOB
(angle whose vertex is the
center of the circle and whose
sides are radii of the circle)
2. Inscribed angles
ACD, BAC, BDC, DBA
(angle whose vertex is on a
circle and whose sides contain
chords of the circle)
Generalization
A circle is the set of all
points on a plane at a given
distance from a fixed point
called the center. A circle is
named by its center, Ex. ʘ A.
A radius (plural, radii) is any
segment joining the center to
a point on the circle.
A chord is a segment
joining any two points on the
circle.
A diameter is a chord
passing through the center.
An arc is a part of a
circle between two points
on the circle.
A semicircle is one half of a circle
0
and measures 180 . A diameter
divides the circle into two semicircles.
A minor arc is less than a
semicircle.
A major arc is greater than a
semicircle.
A central angle of a circle is an angle whose
vertex is the center of the circle and whose
sides are radii of the circle.
An inscribed angle of a circle is an angle
whose vertex is on a circle and whose sides
contain chords of the circle.
The arc that lies in the interior of an
inscribed angle and has endpoints on the angle
is called the intercepted arc of the angle.
