The pheripheral
auditory and
vestibular system
A. AURICLE OR PINNA
BONY PART
• 6 mm lateral to tympanic membrane a narrowing bonny isthmus
(Foreign bodies, lodged medial to the isthmus, get impacted, and are
difficult to remove)
• Anteroinferior part of the deep meatus anterior recess cesspool for
discharge and debris in external and middle ear infections
C. TYMPANIC MEMBRANE OR THE DRUMHEAD
partition between the external acoustic canal and the middle ear
It is 9–10 mm tall, 8–9 mm wide and 0.1 mm thick
2 parts : PARS TENSA & PARS FLACCIDA
• most of tympanic membrane
• periphery is thickened
fibrocartilaginous ring annulus
PARS tympanicus
FLACCIDA
Layers of Tympanic Membrane
Inner mucosal
• continuous with layer •encloses the handle
the skin lining the of malleus
meatus • continuous with •has three types of
the mucosa of fibres—the radial,
the middle ear circular and
parabolic
The ossicles conduct sound energy from the tympanic membrane to the oval
window and then to the inner ear fluid
Maleus, incus, stapes
BONY LABYRINTH
Vestibule
Semicircular canal
Cochlea
(a) Scala vestibuli,
(b) Scala tympani,
(c) Scala media or the membranous cochlea
THE INTERNAL EAR
MEMBRANOUS LABYRINTH
1. the cochlear duct
2. the utricle and saccule
3. The three semicircular ducts, and
4. the endolymphatic duct and sac.
AUDITORY SYSTEM
1. Tunnel of Corti
2. Hair cells
3. Supporting cell.
4. Tectorial membrane
3. NEURAL PATHWAYS
Central axons of hair cells collect to form the cochlear nerve to the ventral and
dorsal cochlear nuclei crossed and uncrossed fibres travel to the superior olivary
nucleus, lateral lemniscus, inferior colliculus, medial geniculate body and finally reach
the auditory cortex of the temporal lobe
SYSTEM VESTIBULAR
Peripheral receptor
Cristae
located in the ampullated ends of the three semicircular ducts.
These receptors respond to angular acceleration.
Maculae
located in otolith organs (i.e. utricle and saccule)
sense position of head in response to gravity and linear acceleration
VESTIBULAR NERVE
Vestibular or Scarpa’s ganglion is situated in the lateral part of the internal
acoustic meatus.
It contains bipolar cells.
The distal processes of bipolar cells innervate the sensory
