INTRODUCTION TO ADHESION OF
POLYMERS

 Adhesion is a property of materials where it joins

two or more than two layers/parts of materials
 General materials used for adhesion are paste,
cement, glue etc…
 It is used in construction, production, reliability
and development of joints
 Surface properties has higher concerned in this
regards
 If the surface is not adhesive naturally, it is
altered chemically and physically
INTRODUCTION TO ADHESION OF
POLYMERS

 A few examples of polymer surface modification

techniques are: roughening with sand paper,
etching with chemicals, flame treatment, plasma
treatment and chemical surface modification.
 material surfaces need to be tailored and
engineered.
PEEL TESTING
 Peel testing is performed to get average
force/area travel through the layers, Peeling tests
are the practice of testing adhesion properties of
film bonded to substrate, usually by tensile.
 Applied forces and their position in adhesives
varies, that’s why different peels are designed on
the basis of directions and dimensions of samples
