EDU 201 – Introduction to Elementary Education

College of Southern Nevada

 The philosophy I ranked the highest was Existentialism.

 Existentialism is a teaching philosophy that emphasizes individual freedom,

existence, and personal choice. A teacher whose philosophy is based on

existentialism provides students the opportunity to determine their own values and
identity. Existentialist education “recognizes the role of both culture and individual
nature in identity formation.”
 Prior to completing this assignment, I was under the impression that my
philosophical view was leaning more towards Progressivism; however, after
completing this assignment I can understand why I would have a more existentialist
view on education. I believe that teaching is much more than curriculum and what
is required by the school districts. We are with students more time during the day
than their parents are. I think, as part of our job, we should be teaching students
more about life and their choices. And sometimes, we will stumble upon students
who don’t have an active parent in their life and they lean towards school and their
teachers to help them understand more.
