Semiotics
- involves the study
not only of what we
refer as ‘signs’ in
everyday speech, but
of anything which
‘stands for’ something
else

is any form of
activity, conduct, or
process that involves
signs, including the
production of
meaning.
Two Main Emphases of Current
Semiotic Theory
subjective aspect of
signification
social aspect of
signification
• Meaning is not ‘contained’
• Meaning is not ‘transmitted’
• Helps us to be aware in every
signs of code
• Teaches us that reality is a
system of signs.
Text analysis is
about parsing
texts in order
to extract
machine-readable
facts from them.

 What is so unusual about it?
 Is the characteristic very unusual for the
speaker or the situation?
 Is it something you do not understand?
 Or is it something that appears in more
than one place in the text or
conversation?
