STRESS

AND
FILIPINOS THE SOCIAL
AND CULTURAL
DIMENSIONS OF STRESS

R I VA S , M A . J A N E L A A .
HOW DO WE SAY
WE’RE
STRESSED IN FILIPINO?
We don’t.
Because we don’t have a Filipino word
for it.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t feel it.
STRESS-RELATED
ILLNESSES
ARE OFTEN DISMISSED.
It’s the old age saying that it’s
“it’s all in your head.”
DRUG COMPANIES AND
BUSINESSES EXPLOIT
STRESS.
They give out false advertisements,
promising relieve of stress when you
take their product.
CONTRARY TO POPULAR
BELIEF, YOU CAN’T
RELIEVE STRESS BY PILLS.
Drug treatments only help with the aftermath of
stress.
It doesn’t get rid of stress itself.
NEW AGE THERAPIES
ARE NOT ALL EFFECTIVE.
Yoga, massage, aromatherapy are another ways
of exploiting stress-related illnesses.
STRESSORS ARE
NOT UNIVERSAL.
We say ‘noise’ is stressful,
but to what extent is that the case?
FILIPINOS ARE
RESILIENT.
Although it’s a positive adjective,
it’s not always something we should be proud
about.
Resiliency is happiness on surface.
FILIPINOS ARE
DECEPTIVE.
We are good actors.
Filipinos’ resiliency is a stress-coping
mechanism.
IS THERE AN EPIDEMIC OF
STRESS-RELATED
ILLNESSES?
Michael Tan says there already is an epidemic.
However, we just don’t tackle it.
STRESS MANAGEMENT IS A MATTER
OF HELPING PEOPLE RECOGNIZE NOT
JUST THE BEAUTY OF THE WORLD,
BUT THE BEAUTY OF THEIR LIVES AS
WELL.
