Graphics Card

The document discusses graphics processing units (GPUs) and their role in computers. It provides an introduction to GPUs and their uses for animation, gaming, design work, and medical instruments. It then covers the components of a GPU including the graphics processing unit, video memory, ports, and cooling devices. It discusses how GPUs work by taking data from the CPU and figuring out how to render each pixel to create an image. The document concludes with a brief history of GPUs and mentions the major manufacturers, including Intel, AMD, and Nvidia.

Introduction
 A Video card, also known as a graphics card is the part
in the computer that creates all the images that we see
on our monitors
Uses
 Animation
 Gaming both PC and console
 Design/Drafting
 Special effects creation/editing
 Medical Instruments
 And other purposes where fast rendering and high
resolutions are needed
Construction & Components
 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
 Video Bios
 Video Memory
 Graphics Port (AGP) (DVI) (HDMI) (VGA)
 Motherboard Interface (Slots)
 Cooling Devices (Fan)
 Output
Working
 Take data from CPU and figure out what to do with
each pixel to create image
 Fill remaining pixels with color, lighting, and
texture
 The filling will consider viewpoint
 GPU creates image, stores image with location and
color of each pixel in memory
 Memory also holds completed images until its
time to display them (frame buffer)
 Digital-to-analog converter (DAC)
History
 1981:
Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA) was the first
video card created in 1981 displays green text
on black screen
 2000s:
NVIDIA was first to produce a chip capable of programmable
shading, GeForce 3 (NV20); Oct. 2002, ATI Radeon 9700 (R300),
was introduced as the world’s first Direct3D 9.0 accelerator.
GPUs
Types of GPUs
 Dedicated Graphics Card:

 Integrated Graphics:

 Hybrid Graphics:
Manufacturers
 Intel develop IGPs (integrated graphics
processors)
 AMD (acquired ATI) develop GPUs
 Nvidia also develop GPUs
 Most popular video brands are the Radeon of ATI
and GeForce of Nvidia
Conclusion & Summary
 Video cards are used mainly for gamers
 We can create three dimensional pictures and games
 We can watch pictures and films in high resolution
