l x y e u a
e c a n l
a u r t l
s s y
e e
Parentheses
•The first step of the order of operations is

Ex. (3 x 6) = 18 Ex. (3 x 6) + 2 = 20

18 + 2 = 20
Exponents
•The second step of the order of operations is

52 = 25 3 + 25 = 28
Multiplication
•The third step of the order of operations is
multiplication.

Ex. 6 x 4 = 24 Ex. (3-2)2 x 4 = 4

1x4=4
Division
•The fourth step of the order of operations is
division.

Ex. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 Ex. 8 ÷ 2 + (3 x 6) = 22

4 + 18 = 22
Addition
•The fifth step of the order of operations is

Ex. 3 + 6 = 9 Ex. 3 + 4 ÷ 2 = 4

3+2=4
Subtraction
•The last step of the order of operations is
subtraction.

Ex. 16 – 4 = 12 Ex. 18 – (2 + 2)2 = 2

18 - 16 = 2
