Paulo Coelho (August 24, 1947, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian novelist, dramatist and lyricist. He is one of the
most read writers and novelists in the world with more than 200 million books sold in more than 150
countries (224 territories), translated into 81 languages. He is the writer with the largest number of
followers in social networks, reaching figures of 29.5 and 12.2 million only on Facebook and Twitter. But in
spite of his great popularity, none of his books is considered of great influence in the literature and he is
known as a plagiarist. 2 Since October 2002, he has been a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He
has received outstanding international awards and recognitions, such as the prestigious Chevalier de L'Ordre
National of the Legion d'Honneur of the French government, the Gold Medal of Galicia and the Crystal
Award granted by the World Economic Forum, among many other prizes that he has obtained thanks to his
great success. In addition to receiving outstanding prizes and international mentions, he is currently a special
advisor of Unesco for the program of spiritual convergence and intercultural dialogues as well as Messenger

world. He achieved success with his greatest work The Alchemist. Paulo is married to the Brazilian painter
Christina Oiticica.
