of interaction with the natural environment.
INDIGENOUS

through generation
The information base for a society which
facilitates communications and decision
making.

and are continually influenced by internal
creativity and experimentation as well as by
contact with external systems.(Flavier et. al

• The Paper Concepts, Functions, Application to
Development Process (ISK and
GeoInformation systems) by M.K McCall
(2005) provides what can be considered a
practical guide to indigenous knowledge.
• It also references the International Institute
for Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) toolkit for
documenting IK. Titled recording and using
indigenous knowledge. A Manual Silang,
Cavite IIRR it is available in print and online (In
limited parts).
According to IIRR toolkit here are some
considerations when it comes to resources of
information about IK.
 Community members, especially elders, are
the best source of IK. But, since IK is unevenly
distributed in communities, it is important to
find out who know what in order to tap the
right sources.
 Folklore, songs, poetry, and theater can reveal
a great deal about a peoples, values, history,
and practices. These are often not written
down and need to be recorded.
 Community records-although IK is mostly
transmitted by word of mouth , some
indigenous forms of record keeping exist
.These include writings , paintings , and
carvings .Records can also consist of trees
planted as boundaries, notched poles , bones
,and many other forms.
 People working with communities ,such as the
extensionist can be valuable source of IK.
