Article 370 gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir by allowing it to have its own constitution and limiting central government powers over the state. It exempted the state from fully applying the Indian constitution and only allowed the central government powers over defense, foreign affairs, and communications. Other central powers required the state's concurrence. Article 370 could only be amended with a recommendation from the state's constituent assembly and prevented outsiders from buying land or obtaining government jobs in the state. However, it also limited industry and investment in Jammu and Kashmir.
